BC potato acreage is down approximately 2% for 2025, with growers expected to plant just under 5,800 acres this spring. According to the BC Vegetable Marketing Commission, some farmers are shifting to other root crops, with carrot acreage up 9% and significant increases in yellow onions, parsnips, rutabagas, and white turnips. Meanwhile, greenhouse tomato production is booming, with a 24% increase in growing area.

It’s unfortunate that the kids that want to farm might never be able to attain the land to do it. There are some great future farmers and we need to make things easier for them to get into this lifestyle

This is an issue that has been bothering me for years. Kudos to the BC Agriculture Council and BC Young Farmers for your leadership!
